Why Wii?

The new Nintendo gaming system is called "Wii," pronounced "we." Um okay, that's kind of different. Made the trademark search easy, I suppose. I can't say I hate it, but I'm sure many are saying just that. Penny Arcade commented on it today as well.

The biggest problem Nintendo is going to have is that nobody will pronounce it "we" or "whee," they're going to pronounce it "why." As in, "Why did they pick that name?"

The remote-control controller looks way stupid.

yea, but you know what the best part of this entire system is? You can download old games right to the box!!!! I can be flying in my racoon suit in no time!

Tanooki ftw!

Seriously, though, gamers hate every new system's name. The Dreamcast, Gamecube, and XBox all got the same treatment. You can even look back at Penny Arcade's archives and probably see some of their stuff about names.

Since the name of a system is 100% marketing, then you have to look at it from a marketing perspective. The purpose of the name isn't to snare hardcore gamers, they're going to get it or not get it regardless. Therefore, something that stands out is vastly preferrable to "Gamestation II: The Final Frontier Part 1" or whatever.

All in all, given the reasoning behind it, it's a decent choice. Yeah, it's a stupid name, but they all are, really.

I like the remote control. It's something people are familiar with holding and will be easy to swing around. The nunchucks I'm less sure about.

Anyway, it's not like I won't be snapping on the standard controller when I want to play Madden 200X or Tony Hawk: Wheelchair Edition.

As to the name, I don't hate it, but I can't say I like it either. Oh well, it's just a name.

But you're all talking about it, and raising awareness that there's a new system coming out. You read the story and learned of how it is different from what's out there. You saw the remote, the colors, how the sticks work, maybe some software titles and perhaps the release date and cost.

All in all, I would say that even though I think Wii sounds stupid, the marketing department is laughing all the way to the bank.
