Million Dollar Homepage.

No, it's not this one (I wish), but there's some crazy dood who sold ad space on his homepage at $1 per pixel.

It's like getting every pop-up ad you ever got in your life, at once. It's the Internet equivalent of suddenly feeling like you want to take a shower.
He put the last bit up on eBay and went over the million dollar mark. Proving once again that a new idea on the internet can make you money. Something like this only happens once, despite the fact that there are copycats and parody sites arising.

i stumbled across this as well because at my previous job we paid close attention to Alexa numbers. Alexa = Nielsen for teh interweb. Everytime the execs had a meeting with a bigger company (Google, Warner bros, etc) they would always quote Alexa numbers (you can install it as a toolbar)

ANYWAY...

the million $ homepage was like the #1 fastest growing website (in terms of page views). You can also compare websites to one another in terms of hit counters, etc.

I think the amazing thing is that you only make money off of this if you are the first to do it (or, at least, the first to publicize it). You get all the press and publicity and people come to your site. Once it has been done, no will care about other sites that do it.
