The Link Field: Threat or Menace?

I am proud to announce that I have now formatted my posts to look just like my beloved BoingBoing, which is to say that the headline is no longer a link ever never, and each post has a little "Link" link at the end when a related article is involved. Just where it should be. And the link to this article describes how the hell all this stuff works with Blogger.

In addition to the new banner up above, which doesn't really fit with this template, I have embarked upon a search to find a new template, and literally tried out over fifty different ones and didn't like any of them. Well okay, I liked one of them, but when I got done it looked just like Hollywood's. The banner has tight kerning and denim, which says "Me" in so many ways. More on this exciting story as it develops.

You have tight kerning? That sounds uncomfortable. Kind of like having your knickers in a twist.

Tight, but not touching, as we used to say back in the Sixties.

I don't like it.

The typeface is yuck. I think you're going for an old typewriter-type style, there, but it falls flat for a couple of reasons. One, no bolt on a typewriter. Two, that "Y" just gives me the wiggins. It just looks drastically out of place. In short, there, I think you're trying to give a classical feel, while using modern updates, which deep-sixes the whole thing.

Two, god, the inline quotation marks are tacky. Always have been. You'd be better off with the European style << >> quotation marks. But since no one will know what those are, defeats the purpose. I think you'd be better off with a steady icon of just the quotation marks. Like a typographical yin-yang.

Three, the denim's okay, but the drop shadow on the text is odd. It's either too short of a drop shadow, or you need to do away with it altogether. Possibly flattening it and then doing an outward burn, maybe. At least in concept. I'd have to play around with it to see if it works. Or a longer shadow, but softer.

And damn you for giving me the capacity to write a post like this one.

What's a "bolt"?

The fact that the Y gives you "the wiggins" means I have succeeded. This is the other side of being a teenager and doing things to piss off your parents... as a parent, you can do things to piss off your kids. Same level of satisfaction.

Although to be honest, I don't like the drop shadow either.

Thanks for your comments, and please don't be shy in the future. :)

I meant bold. Been playing too much DAoC.

Bolt/DoT ftw.

And I never did anything expressly to piss you guys off. Hell, I listened to weird music, and you liked that. You got me into gaming. I provided hours of entertainment in the form of Resident Evil 2 and Spyro playing.

WHAT THE HELL DID I EVER DO TO YOU?

*sob*

Ick! I hate it! Menace! Menace!!

Reminds me of the typeface for Lou Grant, back on CBS when it was for old people.

Err...or so I have been told.

Hmm. LWC and I just discussed this, and found out that we never did anything to expressly piss off our parents either. So I guess I'm breaking new ground here. You owe me one. Free shot. I'm right here, what are you waiting for?

Ah, looks like everybody hates it, a complete success! Pissing people off FTW!

Dad.

You're a doodoohead.

That good enough?

The headlines were links? Oh yeah. I thought you underlined them cos they were headlines.

I do like your banner BTW but it clashes with the rest of the site, as you say. Glad to see your years of on-the-job training in effect there, as you decide the only practical solution to this problem is to change the rest of the site :)

I think we taught you to use better language than that. However, that will do, and we're now even.

LOL a lot at this one. I could say that it was just part of a complete site redesign, but that still sounds like Warren, doesn't it? :P

I found WYGIWYD, a relation of WYSIWYG, while reseraching my post on acronyms:

What You Get Is What You Deserve.
Much more fun than the original. Great reminder for people who still don't understand that if you pay peanuts you get monkeys. And that nobody, especially monkeys, can make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. Also great for people who can't brief designers and programmers properly, don't check copy until final proof stage, keep changing specifications while work's under way, etc. You know the types...

The most curious part of the process for me is the following. (1) I decide that blue might be nice with the new banner. (2) I go through all the motions of rebuilding the site with a blue Minima background, only to find it looking like Hollywood's. (3) Shopping around, I become determined not to have a white background like every fucking body else. (4) I realize that my site HAS A WHITE BACKGROUND NOW so what's the big deal??? (5) I decide that demented is like crazy but you keep ending up in the same place, which is worse.
