[WITH_TEETH]

The new Nine Inch Nails Album. Thanks to The Son for the heads up on this one. As usual.

Holy fucking Jesus H. Christ the Third on a stick on his throne.

It's THAT good? Or THAT bad? Hot Topic (in the mall) were advertising With Teeth merchandise, if you're interested. I didn't stop to see what it was.

Means good. I get excited sometimes. Thanks for the tip.

My jury's still somewhat out. Sometimes, I get in the right mood, and just sit back and ignore the weird lyrical stuff he's doing on this album, and just absorb the music, which, as usual, is eclectic and exquisite.

I swear to god and all that is holy, if I ever, and I mean ever, hear a song which is actually wholly done by Trent Reznor and Maynard James Keenan, I will die a happy man.

And Passive/Tapeworm project doesn't count, you people.

Anyway, I'll have to look into the merchandise. I'll pitch the album. Like every other NIN album, they hit #1 on the Billboard charts their first week, and will likely drop completely off the second...

I was wondering what the "hardcore fans" (that means you, B) thought of this album. For me, it's a bit more accessible and a bit less unfocused angst, so I like it a lot. It was a lot easier for me to get into these songs than some other previous songs I've heard.

Um, well, I dunno that I qualify in the "hardcore fan" category, since I never use the words "sold out."

You're right in that it doesn't really sound anything like PHM or TDS, but I can draw some definite comparisons to The Fragile. It just seems that Trent has hit that point as an artist where it becomes less about screaming, and more about making music.

Though, my involvement in With Teeth requires a slight story. I had no clue anything was coming out until I bought The Fragile (for the fourth time, my new record) at Slackers, and the guy said "hey, I heard that new single, sounds weird." I was like "new single?"

Anyway, went home and not-so-legally downloaded The Hand that Feeds, and I thought "this only sounds weird because it doesn't sound weird." It sounds like just about every other rock song in existence. Which isn't to say I don't like it, just that it doesn't sound like NIN much at all.

But, I then went back and listened to PHM and TDS again, and it sounded so grating to me, compared to The Fragile and the new single.

I still think PHM and The Fragile are his two best albums, for drastically different reasons, but there are some high quality tracks on With Teeth, notably All the Love in the World and The Hand that Feeds. A couple of the songs try too hard to be throwbacks, like The Collector, though, and I don't like them as much...

I'm sure that Trent is trying to please all his fans, just a little. This is the same kind of trap Metallica fell into I think, with a new sound sort of and still doing older type songs.

Anyway, glad you liked it. The fans that scream "sell out!" every time an artist makes money are not really paying attention, in my book.
