Stupid things are stupid.
Sometimes, things are so self-evidently stupid that you assume everybody can see that and you just move on. However, the way things are going these days, it's not gonna hurt to have a few more of us point out the stupid things. Mostly because regular journalists aren't doing their jobs, so it's up to us amateurs to take up the slack.
Jon Stewart made some excellent points in a debate about gay marriage in the episode shown below. If marriage provides stability to straight couples, why can't gay couples get that stability too?
Stewart also skewered the concept of "slippery slope" by pointing out that it works both ways. Conservatives argue that if we allow gays to marry, we will legalize polygamy next. Stewart said that if we prevent gays from marrying, who will we prevent from marrying next? Poor people? Then Stewart asked why arch-conservative Dick Cheney is not against gay marriage, the answer being that Cheney's daughter is gay, which gets to the real heart of the issue.
Totally on the fly, Stewart prolonged the debate with Bill Bennett simply because it was going good (honestly, both men represented their views well) and extended the segment to the last part of the show.
While we're counting stupid things, in addition to making the point that preventing gay couples from getting married is stupid, it's also stupid that politcians would waste so much of the country's time by putting forth an amendment they knew would not come close to passing simply to pander to their constituents.
