101 best screenplays.
Writers Guild of America list. How many of your top 100 are on this list? I have 21 of these screenplays in my Top 100 Favorite Movies. Be forewarned, young'uns, there are movies in BLACK AND WHITE mentioned here. I know how that scares you all so.

Jerry Maguire?
Maybe I'm coming at this from an "I hate Tom Cruise" angle that's making me biased, but, um, Jerry Maguire?
Not the worst movie ever, but I dunno if "You had me at hello," elevates it to the level required to make a list like this.
That being said, there were many really well-written movies on that list. Memento really should have been higher, if only for the complexity level of the story. Certainly above Jerry freakin' Maguire, anyway.
3. I have 3.
And tom cruise sucks.
I don't have a top 100 favorite movies list, so 0 for me. Not for lack of movies, really, more for the fact that my taste generally is far too skittish. I have a tendency to get on a movie or genre of movies, and watch the crap out of them for a while, then move on.
And I always thought "you had me at hello" was awfully contrived. I mean, really, if that was the case, why wasn't she flinging herself at him when he said hello?
The only explanation I can gather is that she would have flung herself over his head. Little scientologist bastard.
Tom Cruise didn't write that screenplay, ya know. And the fact that everybody still remembers lines from that movie makes it at least memorable if not good. I didn't care for the movie much, but it was okay.
Only one that jumped out at me as odd was "Witness". Nothing exceptional about that movie. I'm a Ford fan and I couldn't quote a line of that movie. What I do remember is that it's Viggo Mortenson's first role and Kelly McGillis gets naked, ensuring her subsequent fade into obscurity.
True, Witness was a lame movie. And I like the evaluation procedure of "I can't quote a line from that movie." or remember a scene, maybe. A truly great screenplay should deliver something that you remember for years.
how is the 5th element NOT on this list?
Travesty!
8 of the movies on this list are on my top 100.
I've *seen* 37 of the 101 movies, though -- a far better tally than I've seen of the AFI Top 100 Film list.
Thirty-seven??!!
