Love kills.

There may be spoilers here for Lost and Battlestar Galactica. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, DON'T READ ANY MORE! STOP HERE! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

Am I too picky to watch episodic television? I present here an example situation that I find undigestible. Guy and girl begin noticing each other with coy glances. Guy and girl start holding hands. Guy and girl smooch. This goes on for five or six episodes. Then all in one episode, they declare their undying love to each other and plans to spend their lives together, suddenly advancing the relationship from First Base to Game Seven of the World Series.

Then what happens? BLAM. One of them gets shot. Contrived and stupid. You can see it coming like a fire truck with the siren on. Sayeed and Sharon. Billy and Dee. The latter pair seemed to have an interesting triangle developing, since she didn't love him the same way. Great performance from the guy that played Billy. Oh yeah, let's pile on a sudden declaration about how much the Prez loves Billy too, just for fun. Which is like a second death sentence. Then BLAM.

What am I learning from these morality plays? You can mess around, but don't get serious or one of you will get killed. Stupid and contrived.

The Sayeed-Sharon thing had the addition of some potential racial undertones, just to stir the pot (not that THAT particular "moral" is at all original).

Can anything that can be called a "Billy-Dee" relationship ever work? I say no...

... unless there's some Colt 45 involved.

Too many writers think Romeo & Juliet is a good model to copy.

Oh well. As I suspected. I listened to the podcast, and the actor who plays Billy was getting lots of offers and wanted out. So this was probably an unexpected plot development, and they contrived all this stuff to give him a good sendoff. In light of that, they did a good job. I'm happy they didn't go the obvious "Romeo & Juliet" route, and at least offered the love triangle. Oh well.
