Most Hated Movies

Roger Ebert is a doofy guy, but I generally like his reviews. He's often kind to "genre" movies, although his list of most hated here includes the two "Resident Evil" flicks and "Stargate,"" which I liked. Ebert also hates "The Usual Suspects," which was real cool in my estimation.

I would have to include "Batman Returns," a horrible piece of filmmaking that I saw for free on cable and wanted my money back. I am most distrustful of Tim Burton to this day because of this movie. Also "Be Cool," which we left in the middle of, a pitiful imitation of the fine film "Get Shorty." "Matrix Revolutions" was pretty awful, even though it had a few redeeming scenes. "Titanic" was a boring, pedantic, sappy love story that had me cheering when DiCaprio died. LWC and I both hated it. I still maintain that "Attack of the Clones" has no redeeming value whatsoever.

What are some of your Most Hated Movies?

The first two that come to mind are Stargate (though it pains me to agree with Ebert) and Alien 4. (Alien 3, for that matter, but 4 was much worse because I expected it to be good because of Joss.)

Stargate and I didn't sync at all. That is the only movie I've ever fallen asleep in the middle of, in a public theater. I don't even think I was that tired.

Alien 4 was just absolute rubbish. The guy acting as the greek chorus, narrating what was going on while he was strapped to the wall when that hybrid alien queen thing was making its move near the end of the movie was what tore it for me.

I was also dragged to see Ace Ventura (part 1 or 2, I can't remember) by a bunch of engineers when it came out. Absolutely hated it.

Ah, I did dislike Wild at Heart as well, and while I don't have a very good memory of the plot, I also remember not enjoying Raising Arizona.

I realize some people would think a couple of those are "classics", but they just don't work for me. I'm sure their producers are out there just crying their eyes out.

The Man Who Cried (it was me, the film was so bad)

Ace Ventura - in fact, just about any Jim Carrie movie

Austin Powers - and the Company made a card game based on it??????

Waterworld - wet, wet, wet

I'm sure there are more that will come back to me if I unblot the memories.

Grunt,

The reason to do an Austin Powers game had nothing to do with it being a good movie. This is the one point I'll concede to W on a well-played strategy.

It's strange, but I don't have a lot of "hated movies" at my fingertips, easily recalled as my favorite movies. Perhaps because I haven't made a list... :-)

I will agree that I was similarly unimpressed by Stargate when I first saw it, but I would not go so far as to say I hated it. I merely didn't care much one way or the other. But that said, I've recently discovered the TV series, which is far better than the source material that spawned it.

Maybe I'm just too much in love with David Fincher's movies, but when I watched Alien 3 again (when the Alien box set was released last year), it wasn't nearly as bad as I'd remembered. What they did to Newt and Hicks at the start of that movie was deplorable. The fact that the whole movie appeared to be driven by Sigourney Weaver saying, "I'll only agree to do this movie if... if... I can... shave my head! Yeah, that's it! And DIE!" -- well, that's shameful too. But if you can somehow divorce yourself from the film having anything to do with the first two and just approach it as a self-contained piece of its own, it's not so bad. But then again, you could go watch Seven, or Fight Club, or The Game instead (all in my top 100 list) and be infinitely more rewarded.

Alien 4... well, again, I'm being an apologist for someone I like (Joss Whedon), but upon seeing that movie (again, on the box set), it was better than I remembered. I pretty well enjoyed everything up until Sigourney fell down the hole into the alien nest and had some weird moment Stanley-Kubrick-meets-David-Cronenberg moment. Everything after that was total crap. But, here again, you don't really have to make yourself like this film... just go watch Buffy or Angel or Firefly instead.

Austin Powers would peg my HATE THIS list pretty highly.

Autin Powers definitely ranks. The sequels especially -- just about the most repetetive, uninspired, unoriginal entries in any movie franchise ever.

I manage to avoid most bad films out the gate, but occasionally I just don't click with a movie that I had high expectations for or that everyone else is raving about: Starship Troopers, Blade, the Matrix sequels, and anything touched by the hand of Tarantino except Reservoir Dogs and True Romance.
