Tim Burton is making another stop-motion puppet movie, called "Corpse Bride." This article about Carlos Grangel, the designer and animator, is delightful. It talks about attention to detail, bucking the current market trends, and making good work instead of making work that studio executives like.
Mr. Grangel soon discovered that Mr. Burton's approach to design was radically different from the DreamWorks process. "At DreamWorks, each artist may present 20 or 25 versions of a character," he said. "We didn't design one lion for 'Madagascar'; we made hundreds of lions. We got used to that way of doing things, then one day Tim said, 'Why are you making so many drawings - which one do you like?' "Link

Exactly. This is how it's supposed to work. A visonary hires people to do a job the way they see fit to do it best, without getting in their way.

Oddly enough, I found the same kind of concept in my search for information on whether or not I was employed by Decipher at that point where I owed like 2 grand in taxes.
The law determines employment not by which forms you sign, or what the company calls you, but on the basis of how you do work. If you are given a task, but allowed to complete said task within your own time frame and in a manner of your own choosing, you are an independant contractor. Have fun paying that social security tax.
But if your "boss" has the ability to determine your methods and give you a stricter schedule of when certain parts of the process needs to be done, you are employed by said person, and are entitled to all the benefits thereof.
Pretty glad I never had to talk to a lawyer to justify that in court...:)
I think the key point of this post was that smart employers hire good people and trust them to do the job.
...and as with so many things at Decipher, they got that part half right.
