Charlie and the Power Failure.

What happens when you're in a movie theatre that loses power in a lightning storm?

We went to see Charlie and the Chocolate Factory yesterday. Missed the 3:30 showing and came back at 4:20. In the last 20 minutes of the movie, the power went out. Bam, everything black except for two green exit signs. Shortly thereafter, an usher came by to say it would be back any minute. I spent five minutes formulating how I would ask for a refund, then the movie came back right where it left off. The crowd, which was buzzing during the "intermission," shut up respectfully for the conclusion, which was nice.

How was the flick? I thought it was great. Had everything I wanted: pulling at the heart strings (I'm a sucker for the sappy stuff, for a moment there I felt like a little kid waiting for my Super Sabre airplane toy to come in the mail from Kellogg's), surreal Tim Burton at his best, and some great Johnny Depp. It was all weird and mysterious and I liked it.

The only bits I didn't like were the cheap laughs derived from other pop culture sources, like 2001 and the Beatles. That took me out of the fantasy for a moment. Bottom line, it's just fascinating to watch Johnny Depp work.

Marnie's comment was "I would have liked it better if I hadn't seen Willy Wonka and the Charlie Factory".

Johnny Depp does not = Gene Wilder

LWC said she liked Gene better too. Actually, I liked both Wilder's and Depp's take on the character. I thought the new movie was different enough (they say it's more like the book, but I haven't read it) from the original to justify its existence. I hate shot for shot remakes (like La Femme Nikita and Point of No Return).

I Can't wait to see it!

At first I don't think Kelly was going to go as She "hated" Gene. I know blasphemy. But it's true she didn't like the musical adaptation of what is a great book.

But the ladies love Johnny Depp, so we'll be going.

yea!
