Whither science?

Michael Crichton says that science has become just another political tool, and no longer something based on fact. Global warming? Nuclear winter? SETI? Are these science or cleverly constructed promotional campaigns? Again, we see evidence of facts meaning less and less, even as a part of something that purports to be scientific. I find these things to be terrifying.
